From a Duwamish winter village to the Eastside's most beloved waterfront, this bay has shaped the soul of Kirkland for over 150 years.

Long before the streets of Kirkland were named, Juanita Bay was already a place of gathering, commerce, and community. The history of this bay — and by extension the neighborhood surrounding 8625 NE Juanita Dr — is one of the richest on the entire Eastside of Lake Washington.

A living timeline

From pioneers to public park

PRE-1870s

The Duwamish at təb(ɬ)tubixʷ

Long before European settlement, Juanita Bay was home to a Duwamish winter village of three longhouses at the mouth of Juanita Creek — known as "Loamy Place" in the Lushootseed language, named for the rich, sandy soil still characteristic of the bay's northern shore.

1876

The Forbes family arrives

Dorr and Eliza Forbes traveled west from Iowa, eventually claiming a narrow strip of land directly on Juanita Bay. Dorr established a shingle mill on Juanita Creek — the first industry on the bay — and the family that would define the neighborhood for the next century had arrived.

1916

The lake drops — and a beach is born

Construction of the Lake Washington Ship Canal lowered the lake by 8.8 feet, exposing Juanita Bay's shallow, sandy northern shoreline. What had been murky bottomland became a sweeping sandy beach — unlike anywhere else on the lake — setting the stage for what came next.

1921

The resort era begins

Leslie "Les" Forbes and his wife Alicia opened Juanita Beach as a privately-operated bathing resort. By the 1930s it featured a dance-hall bathhouse, swimsuit and boat rentals, a lunch counter, open-air kitchen, swimming dock, and summer cabins — the most electric destination on the Eastside.

1956

The Forbes sell to King County

After 35 years of operation, Leslie and Alicia sold the beloved resort property to King County for $46,650 — fulfilling their wish that the land remain open to the public forever. Their 1905 family home still stands on the park property today.

2002 – Present

Kirkland's crown jewel

Following a voter-approved levy and major renovations — including a rebuilt bathhouse and new accessible playground in 2020 — Juanita Beach Park is now Kirkland's busiest and most historic waterfront park, spanning 22 acres with 1,000 feet of Lake Washington shoreline.
